Unlocking the Gridlock of Testing from the Cloud

CloudTest Grid, the Next Level of Provisioning

When we started SOASTA it became obvious early on that the requirements for load and performance testing fit the key characteristics of cloud computing: a variable need for scalable compute resources measured in hours, not months or years.  Amazon EC2 was the first to provide a platform that dramatically changed the cost equation for these resources and delivered an elastic API to automate deployment.  As a result, SOASTA was an early adopter of Amazon’s API to reduce the effort of provisioning servers.

That experience has proven invaluable as we’ve grown the company.  As an application that depends on the swift provisioning and releasing of servers, we had to learn how to quickly identify bad instances and bring up replacements. We recognized early on that our customers would want to have load come from different points of presence around the world. As a result, we also needed to enable communications between the various servers participating in a load test, whether they were in one cloud or across multiple clouds. In doing so, we built out the SOASTA Global Test Cloud, a confederation of servers that we access from a number of our cloud partners.

Now, with the delivery of the CloudTest Grid, we’ve taken provisioning to the next level.  We’re very excited and proud to leverage our experiences to make the provisioning of load test servers orders of magnitude easier than its ever been.  From a web browser, a performance engineer can deploy hundreds or even thousands of servers using an intuitive wizard interface.  The wizard walks through a series of steps to enter locations, number of servers and other relevant parameters. The result: within minutes, servers are deployed and our customers are ready to test.  We have a short video in the demo section of our website that shows how this is done.  It would be a long video….except it’s just that easy and fast!
